A headpiece. The term originally referred to a fine, lacey head covering similar to a shawl and made from wool or lace, but mostly with feathers. Fascinators may be worn instead of a hat on occasions where hats were traditionally worn...such as weddings and worn with fairly formal attire. Brides may choose to wear them as an alternative to a bridal veil.

Fascinators are also referred to as cocktail hats or hatinators.

Fascinators have been around for centuries but have become increasingly popular with appearances on the 2008 season of Project Runway and the 2011 Royal Wedding. These days fascinators can be seen as a headband, hat, or hair clip.
